Is a Good GPS System expensive?

GPS systemGPS SYSTEM costs anywhere from $100 to over $2500. All for the same purpose of keeping the user informed on routes leading to his point of interest (destination). There’s no guarantee that the route chosen by the system is the best route available – you could end up in a traffic jam, tough weather, or a closed road due to construction. What determines the decision to spend so little or invest so much in a GPS system?

Does a good GPS system translate to an expensive device?

GPS proponents especially those directly involved with the industry and device makers will have consumers believe that a sound navigation system requires a sound investment. They mention all the nice bells and whistles that have been bundled onto GPS devices in recent years. Live traffic updates, memory SD card support, FM transmitter, Bluetooth handsfree support, Internet Access, Point-of-Interest Searches, Weather updates, Multiple Point Routing, Text-to-Speech, Bigger Touch Screens, exclusive access to free/subscribed Manufacturer updates, CD/DVD player, 3D graphics, portability. The endless list goes on.

From a consumer point of view an honest answer to the good ‘equals’ expensive debate is that you don’t have to pay so much to purchase a GPS SYSTEM that meets your needs (which is good to you in this case).

Comparing High-end & Mid-end GPS tracking devices

Spend some time going through the high-end and mid-end devices on the market and the difference is mostly made up of features that don’t constitute a deal-breaker in several cases. A DVD player, Satellite radio are some luxury features you really can do without while holding a steering wheel. Every other feature we consider basic on a mid-end tracking device is expected to be available on a high-end device with little or no differences to the exact offerings of each feature.

Comparing Mid-end & Low-end GPS tracking devices

Now there’s a real difference between the mid-end and low-end GPS SYSTEM. Coming from midrange priced around $200 - $1000, for low end devices manufacturers often compromise on tangible features to deliver and maintain the eventual low cost of these tracking devices. Very few GPS devices come with traffic updates, weather updates, and point of interest search. Many are built on LCD screens below 3 inches so you’ll probably require a binocular-type vision to read what’s laid out on the screen because then again most low-end tracking devices don’t bother to read out the street names. Voice recognition is a half-half thing. It might be present but may not work as well as GPS trackers on the upper end of the price scale. Intending to find other features like automatic map updates, Micro SD support, Internet Access, Bluetooth Handsfree Calling on these devices is a definite non-issue.
