iPOD is a portable MP3 player marketed by Apple Inc. Recognized as the market leader in lightweight MP3 players, the Apple iPod was launched in 2001 with the catchy slogan “1,000 songs in your pocket” becoming its major selling point. At its time of launch the iPod was one of the slimmest and smallest MP3 devices in the market. This was attributed to the smaller 1.8” hard disk compared to the 2.5” hard disk used by competing devices at the time. Since its inception the iPOD model has sold well over a hundred million units and is now in its 6th generation released in September 2007. The 2G, 3G, 4G & 5G were released in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006 respectively. The 6th generation model is the slimmest portable music player device out yet (without including the Shuffle). It features the same 1.8” hard disk but now with a capacity of up to 160GB on select models. The 6G model uses the same Operating System as the 4G and 5G models. It includes new playlist management features, longer battery life, and rounded edges on its sides. With tremendous success enjoyed by Apple, the company followed up the traditional series with variant models like the Nano, Shuffle and Touch. The iPOD Photo was introduced at some point but it was later integrated into the traditional lineup. |
