Evolution of cell phone batteries

cell phone batteriesCell phones are in the fourth decade of its existence, and are in the second decade of its incarnation as the most popular communication conduit. CELL PHONE BATTERIES have been continuously evolving over the years and have played a crucial role in catapulting cell phones to the top of the chart among communication weapons.

Nickel cadmium batteries that also go by the short name NiCd are the earliest type of cell phone batteries. These batteries, christened by combining the chemical symbols of nickel and cadmium, which are Ni and Cd respectively, were heavier than present day CELL PHONE BATTERIES. Another disadvantage with these to be used as cell phone batteries was that they had to be disconnected from the body of the phone for charging.

Nickel metal hydride batteries referred to as NiMH batteries soon replaced NiCd batteries. These batteries did not have the memory capacity of nickel cadmium batteries but were lighter and slimmer and so became a popular choice for cell phone batteries. It also worked out cheaper than NiCd batteries.  Though NiCd batteries could withstand discharge much better, its heaviness, price credentials, and the fact that it is not environment friendly, made it unpopular as a choice for cell phone batteries.

By the turn of the century NiMH batteries gave way to lithium ion batteries for use as cell phone batteries. These batteries, called Li-ion batteries, are smaller and lighter and do not have to be fully discharged to be charged again. As customers went crazy for smaller and smaller cell phones, Li-ion batteries became the best choice for cell phone batteries. These batteries also provided sufficient talk time and standby time. NiMH batteries are still used in those phones designed to get signals from outside the normal range.

The latest batteries in the cell phone batteries evolutionary ladder are Li-Poly or lithium poly batteries. The cell phone batteries are smaller and lighter than Li-ion batteries. However, these are as yet not produced widely enough to be available for use in all types of cell phones. Research is already on to develop nuclear cell phone batteries, which are supposed to perform better than lithium batteries.

When you buy cell phones, they come equipped with cell phone batteries of the same manufacturers. Though some of these batteries may fit into other cell phone models of the same company, or makes of another company, it will be very unsafe to interchange batteries.

If anything goes wrong with your CELL PHONE BATTERIES, the manufacturing company will give replacement batteries as far as it happens within the warranty period of the cell phone. But they might refuse replacement if your cell phone batteries have conked out by coming into contact with water. There is an indicator on cell phone batteries in the form of a sticker, which will tell the manufacturers the story of its water exposure. This indicator will be white while it is fresh and will become red if the battery has come into contact with water. The red sticker is the red signal that you have not been careful with your cell phone batteries and do not stand to be compensated.
