And to fit into these miniature camcorders, all types of camcorder batteries have also become steadily smaller.
There are basically four types of camcorder batteries that have been in use. These are lead acid batteries, lithium ion batteries, nickel cadmium batteries, and nickel metal hydride batteries. Of these, lithium ion ones are the latest and the most expensive of camcorder batteries. Lead acid batteries are comparatively cheap and do a good job as camcorder batteries. These batteries come fully fused as a protection against acid leak. It is important that lead acid batteries are kept fully charged all the time because when kept uncharged for long its functioning tend to become defective. However, there is no need to discharge this type of camcorder batteries fully, before recharging them. Though lead acid batteries could sometimes take long hours, even up to a full day to get fully charged, there is no threat of the batteries getting overcharged as they have a built-in mechanism that prevents the battery getting heated by overcharge. Lead acid batteries should ideally be stored in a cool and dark place. Since they are an environmental hazard, the user should be meticulous about recycling these camcorder batteries in the larger interests of everyone. Lithium ion batteries are the latest offerings in the camcorder batteries field. They are smaller and lighter than all other types of camcorder batteries and this fact has made lithium ion batteries a very popular customer choice. They have a higher life span than other batteries and are also steadily discharged. Lithium ion batteries have a high charge capacity and can be charged much faster than nickel cadmium batteries that were commonly used as camcorder batteries before it. There is also no need that the lithium ion battery should be fully discharged before recharging. However, these batteries should ideally be kept fully charged all the time. Nickel cadmium batteries are the earliest type of camcorder batteries. They are bigger and heavier compared to the present day lithium ion batteries and lead acid batteries. These batteries have to be fully discharged before recharging. It takes a long time to be charged as well. The positive sides are the ability of this type of camcorder batteries to take heavier loads and also its durability. Nickel metal hydride batteries are quite similar to nickel cadmium batteries and were used as an improvement over nickel cadmium batteries in earlier camcorders. These batteries have a greater capacity than nickel cadmium batteries but are similar to nickel cadmium batteries in all other respects. All types of camcorder batteries have to be stored in a dark, cool place, and protected from shock. While lead acid batteries are the greater environmental pollutant, all camcorder batteries should ideally be recycled. Various non-branded replacement camcorder batteries are available at much cheaper prices than branded ones. But users are warned to do their research well before selecting camcorder batteries only on the basis of cost.
